Case Studies

A snapshot of some of our projects, supplying and installing backup power services across various sectors.

Case Studies

When the University of Oxford approached us to offer backup power services for supporting an additional data centre located in the basement of the Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute, NSSE were able to deliver a UPS system capable of driving significant cost savings in the short and long term in addition to providing a green solution for Oxford University's Computing Services. The resulting backup power service now plays a critical role in hosting the University’s administrative infrastructure as well as servicing over 50,000 active email accounts.

We were able to build upon our long-standing relationship with the University’s Computing Services team and illustrate the B9600 ECO-UPS operating efficiency of 95% in true online mode, thus saving the University significant operating costs over comparable non-eco-friendly equipment. Oxford University was also impressed with its Energy Technology Listing (ETL), the government-managed list of energy-efficient plant and machinery which forms part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) tax scheme for businesses.

The installation, comprising of 2 x Borri B9600 400kVA UPS systems, is now being used to provide power backup power to a new shared data centre for members of Collegiate Universities. The configuration used at the University involves the two 400 kVA UPS systems, installed in an N+1 parallel configuration to ensure that one system always remains operative in the highly unlikely event of a UPS failure. 2 chilled water air handling units provide resilient forced air cooling to ensure the UPS’ and batteries operate in a suitable temperate environment to prolong operation and usage.

B9600 Fxs

THE PRODUCT

The Borri B9600FXS is ideal for large commercial projects due to its 400kVA+ load capacity. Well suited to large data centre applications, the Borri B9600FXS series from 400kVA is scalable in UPS modules up to 6.4MVA. A tier four UPS design can be achieved with a zero break transfer through two independent groups of synchronised UPS units.

A comprehensive NSSE maintenance contract is in place for these 400kVA UPS systems and guarantees a timed response to emergency call outs along with 24/7/365 coverage, technical support, software and firmware updates and annual service visit.

BTG

NSSE were engaged by BTG PLC to identify their power protection requirements at a UK pharmaceutical site and provide a fully comprehensive solution from design through to delivery, installation and ongoing maintenance. Early discussions identified a very small window of opportunity given the critical nature of the business and a tightly managed works programme was executed to coincide with the scheduled shutdown at the plant.

The works required some major cable re-structuring, carried out in unison with the EMBS (External Maintenance Bypass Switches) installations to enhance the project delivery and mitigate any unnecessary delays. 6 UPS units ranging from 10kVA - 60kVA were installed to provide power protection to plant lines and lighting and provide sufficient autonomy (run time) to allow the on-site generator to come online in the event of power outage.

93PS

THE PRODUCTS

2 x Eaton 50kVA 93PM UPS and 4 x Eaton 9355 UPS (10 - 30kVA) were installed in stand-alone configuration across 6 different on-site locations. The 93PM, with market leading efficiency and intelligent software solutions, made this UPS the perfect power protection system for the site's critical plant lines. The smaller 9355 UPS systems, provides premium double-conversion backup power and scalable battery runtimes packing maximum battery runtime into a very small footprint.

A comprehensive NSSE maintenance contract is in place for these UPS systems and guarantees a timed response to emergency call outs along with 24/7/365 coverage, technical support, software and firmware updates and annual service visit.

Lidl

Ever-growing supermarket chain Lidl called on NSSE, as its long-standing power protection partner, to add another 2 Borri UPS systems to support their Leatherhead store’s data centre. Having standardised upon the Borri B9000FXS UPS system for its data centre and back office requirements, the installation comprised 2 x 100kVA UPS configured in parallel.

The B9000FXS UPS features as one of a number of systems on the Energy Technology Listing (ETL), the government-managed list of energy-efficient plant and machinery which forms part of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) tax scheme for businesses. The listing makes this UPS system a very attractive commercial proposition to businesses paying corporation tax who are able to claim 100% first year capital allowance on it.

B9000 Fxs

THE PRODUCT

The B9000 UPS can be configured to operate in parallel, offering an N+1 configuration or alternatively as a power expansion option. The parallel control system tightly manages both active and reactive type loads, allowing for intelligent load/current sharing between each individual module. It features smart online (SOL) mode, which significantly reduces energy consumption as the load is fed primarily through the bypass line.

A comprehensive NSSE maintenance contract is in place for these latest additions guarantees a timed response to emergency call outs along with 24/7/365 coverage, technical support, software and firmware updates and annual service visit.

FEATURES SNAPSHOT

  • Online double conversion topology
  • Transformer based technology
  • TÜV certified high efficiency up to 95%
  • Three year warranty
  • Front access
  • Scalable up to 8 units in parallel
  • IGBT rectifier
  • Smart Online functionality >98%
  • Internal galvanic isolation transformer
  • THDi <3% with input power factor >0.99

GSK Ware

NSSE's long-standing relationship with GSK, Ware has seen many UPS systems installed over the years with NSSE managing the client's entire asset list comprising over 60 UPS systems. The latest additions to this site comes in the form of 3 x Eaton 30kVA UPS systems, each providing power protection and autonomy to critical production lines within the manufacturing plant. We supplied, installed and commissioned the trio of Eaton 93PS UPS to a tight timescale and with minimal operational disruption.

As with all the Eaton UPS systems installed at this plant, the 3 systems are monitored via Eaton's IPM (Intelligent Power Manager) software. IPM provides the tools needed to monitor and manage power devices in a physical or virtual environment. This innovative software solution ensures system up-time and data integrity by allowing you to remotely monitor, manage and control UPS systems and other intelligent devices on your network such as ePDUs. IPM provides a solution that is easy to use and maintains business continuity.

93PS

Stoke Mandeville

In order to support the new Pathology Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, NSSE were appointed to provide 2 x Riello 80kVA, 3 phase UPS systems with parallel redundant configuration. The 'N+1' system, necessary to support the client's requirements, offers additional resilience through having more available capacity than the critical load actually requires. In the event that 1 of the UPS systems fails, the other is immediately on-hand to take up the load and ensure continuation of operations at all times.

The autonomy (runtime) was provided by way of 2 external battery cabinets, each populated with 10 year long-life batteries, the UPS system was monitored remotely via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). With a connection to the local network, Riello's monitoring software Powershield provides efficient, user-friendly UPS management, displaying all major operational information such as input voltage, applied load and battery charge.

Nescot College

Long-standing customer Nescot College approached NSSE with a requirement for a 20kVA UPS system to support their new 1st floor comms room. The UPS needed to be extremely compact as space within the desired location was limited so NSSE designed a solution able to meet the college's runtime requirements but with all the necessary batteries contained within the UPS itself, no external rack or battery cabinet was required. A new electrical installation involved input and output cabling from the existing local 63A Isolator, a new 3 phase distribution board was installed to provide downstream distribution to the critical load through 4 x rack-mounted PDUs connected via 16A Commando plugs.
