The Real Cost of an Unexpected UPS Failure

A UPS is installed to protect an organisation when the mains supply becomes unstable or fails. Yet the UPS itself contains batteries, fans, capacitors and other components that age and require attention.

If a fault occurs unexpectedly, the cost is rarely limited to an engineer’s visit or a replacement part. The greater cost may be the disruption caused to the systems and services the UPS was installed to protect.

The repair bill is only the beginning

An unexpected UPS fault can result in emergency call-out charges, replacement components, temporary power arrangements and out-of-hours remedial work. If the system is obsolete or parts are no longer readily available, an urgent replacement may also be required.

  • fans, capacitors, filters and electrical connections;
  • alarms, event history, software and firmware;
  • load levels, ventilation and ambient conditions;
  • static and maintenance bypass operation.

A detailed service report can then identify corrective work, consumable replacement and lifecycle concerns. This allows repairs and upgrades to be planned, budgeted and completed at a controlled time rather than arranged during an emergency.

The wider benefits include reduced downtime risk, improved system performance, fewer premature component replacements and clearer visibility of the condition and service history of the UPS estate.

Isn’t the manufacturer’s warranty enough?

A warranty and a maintenance agreement perform different functions.

A manufacturer’s warranty may cover eligible parts and labour if the UPS develops a fault, but it does not normally include routine preventative servicing. It may also provide no guaranteed response time or commitment to attend site within the timescale your organisation requires.

For a business dependent on continuous operation, knowing that a repair may eventually be covered is not the same as having regular inspections, technical assistance and a defined emergency response when a problem occurs.
